Let's Share

My new year's resolution was to spend less time talking about creating and more time, you know, creating.  I've been good on my promise, and I've been quite productive with my songwriting and composing.  I have a process now where I make sure that I get in at least two 20 minute music creating sessions every day.  It's really worked for me.  The downside to this increased productivity is that my communication with you has had to take a back seat.

I've also decided that instead of releasing singles, I'm going to hold off on releasing new songs until I have 4 or 5 that fit nicely together on an E.P.

That being said, I miss talking with you!

So, I decided to share this little piece.  It's not available to download yet, but you can stream it now by hitting the play button or clicking here:

Now that I've shared, it's your turn!

Let me know what you are working on in the comments below.

Hope all is well with you,
John Anealio

  1. Hi John!

I love the melody of quitter's Waltz and I'm looking forward to hearing the finished song. Very folksy, just my thing. I'm glad your plan to be more productive is panning out! Great work!

I feel like I've been sick (with some bronchial thing) for forever, so I haven't been doing much singing. I have been writing though and have been working hard on a review of a massive anthology of British Science Fiction Poetry for Amazing Stories. It'll come out this Wednesday and I still have work to do. Ack! But it'll be a good one since the anthology is so great!

    1. Hi Diane!

Glad you like the tune. This is actually the finished version of this song, I'm just waiting to make it available to download until I have an E.P.'s worth of tunes. I plan on releasing an E.P. of acoustic guitar instrumentals next. It should be out soon.

Sorry to hear about your illness. That's the problem with singing, common colds can make it impossible to do. Hope you recover soon and best of luck with your review!

  2. It is cool to hear that you are adjusting your goals to find out what works. That's smart, I think. I've gone back to school (outside of the US, even), which is a huge achievement for me due to some health problems. I've had ups and downs, but I'm still plugging away at my podcast and doing more writing. Every day is a challenge, but I don't feel like the minutes of my life are just ticking away anymore. I look forward to hearing the EPs you are working on! -- Felicia

Great to hear that you are still writing and doing your podcast.

    2. I'm living in Russia and studying Russian. It is a challenge, but I'm surrounded by great people, which makes _such_ a difference.

  3. John that song is awesome! Way to go on being productive! I've been spreading myself thin by trying to get many writing projects done at a time. In 33% done writing a fiction novel, 2 chapters into my first non-fiction book, and I'm writing a short story to submit to an anthology. Ive also been narrating a ton of audiobooks. Most of them have been an hour or so on length so more like short stories, but I've been doing a lot of those. I'm working on my ninth title right now and loving it. Yesterday I used the punch and roll method for the first time to record and was able to produce 3 auditions in the time it usually takes me to do one so I'm really excited for recording audiobooks moving forward!

    1. Thanks Dan! That's great to hear. What's the punch and roll method?

    2. Instead of hitting record doing all the narration then heading stop, and then spending hours editing out the mistakes - while recording if you make a mistake you stop, move the cursor back on the timeline and then keep recording from where you messed up. You can hear your track and you just pick up where you flubbed. When you're done you're left with the track that just needs a little bit of cleanup but not really any editing. It is wonderful.

    3. Cool. I only did a narration once for Mur Lafferty. What I did was set up two tracks in my audio recorder, then I'd read one paragraph or sentence. Stop, switch the second track, record the next paragraph, stop, switch back to the first etc. That way, if I made a mistake, I'd only have to go back one paragraph. I'd then just move all of the various phrases closer together. It worked pretty well for me.

  4. I've been trying to get myself back on track, also. I have decided to take a break from most social media, and many other distractions, for the month of March, so I am not really around much, myself these days. (If you want to read the whole reasoning process behind that decision, I blogged it here: http://wp.me/p3sX1b-8g) Anyway, it seems to be working a bit. I got a flash fiction edited and submitted, a LOT of scattered notes and snippets organized, a couple of in-progress works finished and in the editing process, and the kernel of another story is really starting to take shape. And we've made real progress training the new puppy!

I like the Quitter's Waltz. It has a very pretty melody to it. I look forward to the rest of the acoustic guitar pieces!

    1. Glad to hear that you are turning it around Mary. I think it's a good idea to take breaks from social media. It can be a huge waste of time. That's why I make sure I get my two 20 minute music creating chunks in each day before I start messing with social media and blogs. That stuff is endless, and I find that even when I just want to "check for 5 minutes" I often waste 20 minutes, which I could have spend creating.

Best of luck with everything and I'm glad you like the tune.

  5. Very nice melody! Reminds me of TSO's work. (Always a good thing.)
I've not been by in a while because I joined a Christian rock band almost two years ago and been busy with practices and performances. It's definitely been a learning experience.
And I'm still writing - working on my fourth book.

    1. Thanks Alex! Any music from your band online to listen to? I'd be curious to hear it. Best of luck with the writing and the music!

  6. Glad to see you're finding a way that works for you! I think being able to adjust and adapt are essential elements in life, as it never stays the same, so neither should we. Often easier said than done, of course... lol

In an effort to upgrade my skills, I've started a year-long project. It involves learning new software, refining my meager print design skills, learning what output is best for digital publications, forcing myself to become more comfortable with people by interviewing them, working on some of my writing skills, and remembering to pat the cat.

It can only go up, as the first part was very... um... beginner-ish. Onwards and forwards!

  7. John--
Thank you for letting me hear this relaxing song. It made me think of a friendly wood--not too thick--with shafts of yellow sunlight angling through.
