Album of the Day: Mates of State "Mountaintops"

If you like pop music bursting with keyboards, synths and male/female harmony vocals then you'll love The Mates of State.  Consisting of the husband and wife team of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, the band has put out lots of great music over the past decade, including Re-Arrange Us, one of my desert island discs (I guess desert island MP3 is more accurate, but that just sounds plain silly).  Their most recent album is Mountaintops, and so far, it is proving to be a worthy follow up to Re-Arrange Us. 

Album of the Day: Def Leppard "Mirror Ball"

Def Leppard was the first band that I truly loved.  I wore out 3 cassette copies of Hysteria.  Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't have any of the the Def Leppard studio albums, but they do have this live one. 

Released in 2011, Mirrorball is an excellent live record that showcases the band's strengths: catchy tunes and superb backing vocals.  It's also great to hear Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell cut loose on some extended guitar solos on classic tunes like "Love Bites".

Album of the Day: Toto "Turn Back"

Like Night Ranger yesterday, Toto is a band that I always liked but never heard anything beyond their greatest hits.  Spotify has been a godsend for exploring the older catalogs of bands that I always wanted to learn more about. 

Turn Back has some great songs.  Toto are kind of like an 80's Steely Dan with some hard rock riffing courtesy of guitarist Steve Lukather and some absolutely wonderful piano and synthesizer work by David Paich. 

Album of the Day: Night Ranger "Neverland"

I've been on quite a Night Ranger kick lately.  I've owned their greatest hits for years, but never really listened to their other albums.  I've been exploring the rest of their catalog via Spotify lately and I'm really enjoying it.  Catchy songs, great vocals by Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy and dual virtuoso guitarists in Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson.  Neverland is a reunion album put out in 1997 and it is surprisingly good.

Album of the Day: Eve 6 "Speak In Code"

Eve 6, one of my favorite bands of the late 90's/early 00's, just put out a brand new album.  Been listening to it this morning and it sounds great so far.  Take a listen to it in the Spotify player above.
