Genre Break Song #4: The Ferris Wheel

To commemorate the end of summer, I offer this ode to the New Jersey Shore, The Garden State Parkway, and The Boardwalk. This song originally appeared on a CD that I released a few years ago. For more information on that album, click here.

I hope you enjoy it,

The Ferris Wheel
by John Anealio

She works till 7:30
and I'm lured by this fair mermaid
We sail down the Parkway
and dock at Exit 98

We feel the sunset; a pink and orange glow
We taste the saline from the ocean's flow

We stroll down the boardwalk
and old wood creaks beneath our feet
Flashing lights surround us,
Trade winds blow in from the east

Shore air is heavy with humidity
Arcades are beeping like a symphony

The Ferris Wheel spins tonight
The carousel rings like chimes
Waves are crashing in lament
As Summer Ends

We take our shoes and socks off
our bare feet tread across the beach
The ground's a sandy mattress
The sky's a starry canopy

Salt water's freezing but her arms are warm
The night wind is singing like a troubadour

The Ferris Wheel spins tonight
The carousel rings like chimes
Waves are crashing in lament
As Summer Ends

Here are some of the tools that I used to create this track
  1. Yamaha Acoustic Guitar in Standard Tuning, Capo at 5th Fret
  2. Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar in Standard Tuning, Capo at 5th Fret
  3. Washburn Electric Bass
  4. Fender Mandolin
  5. Chandler Lap Steel (Solo)
  6. Sonor Glockenspiel
  7. Tambourine
  8. Drum Sounds from Roland JV-1010 Sound Module
  9. Digi Design Pro Tools LE on a crumby old PC.

Remix: "Summer Glau"

Here is a really cool remix of my song "Summer Glau" This remix was created by a great ccmixter artist that goes by the name of weathercock. "Summer Glau" is my most remixed song. If you listen closely to this remix, you'll notice that weathercock used most of my original sound sources (vocals, guitar, bass). He added a completely different drumbeat and creatively applied different audio effects like delay and reverb. So even though most of the sound sources are the same as the original, this remix sounds very different (and awesome!).

Podcast: SF Signal Style

In lieu of your regularly scheduled Sci-Fi Songs podcast, I'm posting a link to a podcast that I recorded for SF Signal. I'm pleased to announce that I have just become an SF Signal Irregular, which means that in addition to the new songs, remixes, and podcasts that I post here at Sci-Fi Songs, I will occasionally post blogs and podcasts to the SF Signal site.

In my first SF Signal podcast, I review Roswell Six's Terra Incognita:Beyond the Horizon; a book/CD crossover project by author Kevin J. Anderson. I also explore the relationship between Science Fiction and Fantasy literature and the music of progressive rock bands like Rush, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Spock's Beard, and The Flower Kings.

Check it out here.

I hope you enjoy it,
John Anealio
