The 5 Step "Stargate" Guide To Twitter (Teal'c Edition)

We all need to figure out how to use social media more effectively.  Why not look to our favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy characters for inspiration?

Here are 5 ways to rock Twitter like Teal'c from Stargate SG-1:

1.  Be Succinct
Teal'c was the classic strong but silent type.  He would get his point across with just one or two words.  Even though Twitter allows you to use 140 characters per tweet, shoot for less than that.  Shorter tweets rise above the social media static and tend to get more re-tweets.

2.  Be Strong
Teal'c was the muscle of the team, but he was also the character with the strongest convictions.   Express your opinions, especially if they go against the grain of your community.  You don't have to be bombastic, but differing opinions can facilitate engaging discussion.  (This is something that I need to work on. I'm always afraid of offending people.)

3.  Think of Others First
Teal'c was always willing to sacrifice himself for his teammates.  Don't always talk about yourself on Twitter.  Use the 80/20 rule.  Out of 10 tweets, only 2 should promote your own stuff.  Use the other 8 to point out worthwhile content from your friends and link to interesting and entertaining articles, videos & photos.

4.  Be an Expert
Teal'c was trained from birth to be a fierce warrior.  He was skilled in many forms of combat.  What are you good at?  What do you want to be good at?  Learn as much as you can about your subject and share that knowledge with your followers.

5.  Have a Baby Snake In Your Stomach
Wait... that's not going to help you with Twitter at all.  That's just gross.

    1. Teal'c's gao'uld (sp?) had some definite upsides for him - enhanced strength, immunity to most diseases, greatly prolonged lifespan (he was about 100 when the other's met him, and he spent another ~60years in an alternate timeline near the end, after which he had just a few grey hairs).

So point 5 could be embrace your shortcomings and look for their upsides...

  2. 6. Be Proud

Teal'c was proud of what he did and what he could contribute. He took pride in doing a good job.

I remember not an episode, but a commercial for Stargate where Richard Dean Anderson as Jack talks about his team.

Jack: "...our SG-1 team has saved the earth 4, 5 times"

    Teal'c interrupts: "Seven"

    Jack: "Who's counting?"

    Teal'c: "*I* am"

    That's Teal'c to me!

  3. That baby snake would probably have his/her own twitter following. Do you remember the Bronx Zoo's Cobra (@BronxZoosCobra)? That could be the twitter users unique quality that sets them apart. :)

  5. I like the 80/20 rule. Those kind of twitter feeds annoy me.
